The Demon

Anton Rubinstein

Music Director and Pianist: Ghenady Meirson

December 10–15, 2016

Presented “in concert” in Russian with English supertitles

Anton Rubinstein’s 1875 opera tells the gripping story of a Demon’s pursuit of Tamara, betrothed to Prince Sinodahl.

A piano virtuoso, Anton Rubinstein was also a prolific composer who founded the Saint Petersburg Conservatory and taught composition to Tchaikovsky. Melodic motifs from The Demon inspired comparable motifs in Tchaikovsky’s Eugene Onegin and Mussogorsky’s Khovanshchina.

The opera had its first Philadelphia performance on April 29, 1922 at the Forrest Theater in a Russian Grand Opera Company production. It was produced again in 1928 and then was not performed in Philadelphia until the Russian Opera Workshop produced a concert version in 2015.
