This exquisite bel canto masterwork brings to life a high-stakes love triangle between a monk, a king, and an alluring lover. The monk, Fernando, wishes to leave the monastery because he has fallen hopelessly in love with Leonora, the woman who also happens to be the king’s “favorite.” Amidst the Moorish invasions of Spain, the gripping drama unfolds as Donizetti’s sublime vocal writing tells the story of the lovers’ despair.
